In today’s fast-paced and chaotic world, it can be a true challenge to find moments of stillness and truly listen. The verse from Luke that we just read highlights the importance of Mary’s ability to listen, which is something we can all strive for. With constant distractions and demands vying for our attention, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and disconnected from what truly matters.

The relentless “have to’s” of daily life can feel like a constant drip, slowly draining our energy and leaving us parched inside. However, when Mary turned her gaze towards Jesus, everything else faded away. It makes me reflect on how often I approach Him with one eye on the clock or my phone, only to wonder why I didn’t hear from Him that day.

Listening to God requires intentional effort and a willingness to shut out the distractions that surround us. It means drawing close to Him, allowing Him to captivate our thoughts and hearts. It means being still enough to hear His whispers in the midst of the noise.

We are faced with a choice. Will we continue to embrace the cacophony of the world, or will we intentionally shut out everything else to make room for God’s voice? He longs for us to draw close, so that we can hear Him when He whispers.

Let us take a moment to acknowledge the many things that clamor for our attention throughout the day. Sometimes, the noise becomes overwhelming, drowning out the voice of God. Other times, it is our own cluttered minds that prevent us from hearing Him. In those moments, let us turn to Him and ask for His help in listening for His whispers.

Lord, we recognize our need for You amidst the noise and distractions of life. Grant us the ability to quiet our minds and open our hearts to hear Your gentle whispers. We long to draw close to You and experience the peace that comes from truly listening. Amen.
