God is Our Comfort Have you ever looked around you and wondered, “why is there so much evil, wickedness, and pain in the world?”
In Psalm 94, King David expresses deep concern and distress regarding the state of humanity. Individuals are attributing the prevalence of wickedness in the world to God’s lack of observation and care, implying that God is either unaware of the situation or indifferent to it (verses 1-7).
In his psalm, David acknowledges the Lord as the Creator who possesses omniscience and omnipresence (verses 8-11). This awareness brought David solace, as expressed in verse 19: “When the anxieties of my heart multiply, Your comforts delight my soul.” Despite the wickedness and evil prevalent in both David’s time and our own, he found consolation in his Creator and Saviour.
Consequently, he concludes his psalm with a declaration of trust in the Lord as his stronghold and refuge (verses 22-23). While this psalm addresses challenging themes of pain, anger, sorrow, and injustice, it also offers a prayer of hope and perspective that we can learn from.
In the midst of the prevalent wickedness, injustice, and conflicts that surround us, we can seek solace and tranquillity by emulating King David’s example of turning to God for comfort and peace through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, our sins and shame have been addressed, and we can trust that God will ultimately address all forms of wickedness and evil.
Until that time, like David, we can humbly express, “When the worries of my heart multiply, your comforting presence brings joy to my soul.” By placing our trust in God and acknowledging that He will eventually eradicate all forms of wickedness, we are able to present our aspirations, dreams, apprehensions, and concerns to Him, thereby receiving His comforting embrace. At this very moment, I kindly request that you reflect upon the concerns that weigh heavily upon your heart and consider entrusting them to God’s care. In what ways can acknowledging God’s presence bring solace to your soul?
