There’s a special kind of pride that comes from connecting with your roots, and for me, that connection runs deep. As an Edo boy from the Benin Kingdom, my cultural heritage isn’t just a part of my past; it’s woven into the very fabric of my identity. It influences everything from how I celebrate love to what I eat and how I communicate. My culture is so rich and vibrant, and I am so grateful for how it shapes who I am.
A Culture Woven into Everyday Life
The influence of my Edo heritage is everywhere. It’s in our traditional marriage ceremonies, which are filled with beautiful customs and rituals that honour our families. It’s in our clothing, with its vibrant colours and intricate patterns that tell stories of our history. Our food, with its unique flavours and spices, is a celebration in itself, and our language is a melody of our traditions. For me, these are not just customs—they are a living, breathing part of my life that I carry with me wherever I go.
Our Artistic Legacy: A Creative Spirit
But if I had to choose one aspect that fills me with the deepest sense of pride, it would be the incredible creativity and artistry of our people. The Edo are masters of sculpture and terracotta. The level of detail, the craftsmanship, and the stories told in each piece are simply breathtaking. These are more than just art; they are historical records and spiritual expressions. They are a testament to the advanced civilization that thrived in the Benin Kingdom long before many parts of the world.
It is this very history and artistry that makes it so painful to see some of our greatest works displayed in foreign museums. I, like many others, hope that one day the British will bring back all the ivories and terracotta that were taken from us. These masterpieces belong in our homeland, where they can inspire new generations of Edo artists and be properly celebrated by our people.
A Blessed and Motivated People
Our story is not just one of art and history, but also of incredible blessings and resilience. Our culture carries a deep sense of divine favor and a spirit of determination that motivates us to face any challenge. This sense of self-belief and hope is something we don’t just keep for ourselves; we share it with the world. Through our music, our stories, and our unwavering spirit, we show others the beauty of our heritage and the strength of our character.
I believe our culture is a living testament to creativity, resilience, and a deep-rooted identity that continues to inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves. It is a gift I am proud to share and a legacy I hope to carry forward.
