We spend so much of our lives chasing “more”—more money, more followers, more success. But if you strip all of that away, you’re left with the most profound reality there is: you are here. You are breathing. You have been given the gift of life, and quite honestly, it’s the only gift that truly matters.
Here is why, for me, life is the greatest thing I’ve ever been handed.
1. The Divine “Yes”
I believe that being alive isn’t an accident or a coincidence. It’s a deliberate “Yes” from God. Out of all the possibilities in the universe, you were chosen to exist at this exact moment in history. When I wake up and take that first breath, I’m reminded that I’ve been given another twenty-four hours to try again, to love better, and to make a dent in the world. That’s not just biology; that’s grace.
2. The Gift of “The Small Things”
Life is the only gift that allows you to experience all the other gifts. It’s the smell of coffee in the morning, the sound of my children laughing, and the way the air feels just before it rains. If I weren’t here, I’d miss the quiet joy of a PS5 session after a long day or the deep satisfaction of seeing a student finally “get it”. Life is the canvas that makes every other colour possible.
3. The Power to Change the Story
The beauty of the gift of life is that as long as you have it, the story isn’t over. You can have a terrible Tuesday and a redemptive Wednesday. You can make mistakes, fail spectacularly, and then wake up the next morning with the power to pivot. Life gives you the agency to be a “human barometer” for others to bring peace, to fight for justice, and to build legacies that outlive you.
4. Passing It On
The best way to say “thank you” for the gift of life is to use it to help others live better. Whether it’s through teaching, sending aid to those in need, or just being a stable presence for your family, the gift of life is meant to be shared. It’s a flame that doesn’t go out when you light someone else’s candle; it just makes the room brighter.
The Final Thought
We often forget how fragile this gift is until it’s threatened. But today, I’m choosing to celebrate the simple fact that I’m standing. I didn’t earn my heartbeat, and I can’t buy more time when it runs out, so I’m going to make sure I don’t waste the now.
