What positive emotion do you feel most often?

The positive emotion I feel most often is peace of mind. It’s not a flashy emotion like excitement or joy, but it’s the one that forms the bedrock of my well-being. It’s a profound sense of calm that comes from being settled and centered, regardless of what’s happening around me.

What Peace of Mind Feels Like

For me, peace of mind is like a quiet pond. Even when a storm is raging above, the water remains still and clear beneath the surface. This feeling comes from a few key sources: the confidence that comes from knowing I am well-prepared for a task, the feeling of contentment that settles in after a productive day, or the serenity that comes from a quiet moment of reflection. It’s that feeling of knowing things are alright, even if they aren’t perfect.

The Role of Letting Go

A big part of cultivating peace of mind is learning to let go. This isn’t about giving up or being passive; it’s about releasing the need to control everything. It’s the realization that some things are simply out of my hands, and that’s okay. When I cast my worries and anxieties aside, I create space for tranquility. This practice allows me to focus my energy on what I can control and release what I can’t, which is an incredibly freeing feeling.

Ultimately, peace of mind is my most cherished positive emotion because it’s a state of being, not just a fleeting feeling. It allows me to navigate life’s ups and downs with a steady spirit and a hopeful heart. It’s a constant source of quiet strength that makes all of life’s other emotions—even the challenging ones—feel more manageable.

  1. Thanks for thoughts on peace of mind as a valuable emotion. I wrote in Science and Spirituality: celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first edition of Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health, “An infant cries. When hearing the cry, we feel a desire to do something, even if not knowing what or why. Desire happens. Prayer happens. But prayers are answered according to motive, not according to desires, faith, words, deeds, emotions, theology.
“No loss can occur when trusting infinite mind to purify and uplift our desires.”
    The desire for peace…
